Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime experience through East Africa’s quintessential encounters and wildlife havens housing many endangered animals. Leaving Nairobi’s city bustle, we’ll be welcomed into the arms of sweeping plains of savannah in the legendary Masai Mara National Park. The Mara’s grasslands and trees offer spectacular game viewing, famed for their Big Five populations and dense concentration of predators that roam and hunt in the park.
From one gorgeous park to another, we head up north through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park, a preserve for black and white rhino and famous for the thousands to millions of pink flamingos wading in the lake. Crossing into Uganda, “the Pearl of Africa”, we follow the Nile to Jinja. This town offers optional adrenaline activities, or the chance to relax riverside before heading to the abundant wilderness of Murchison Falls National Park. Here, the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge to create the tempestuous Murchison Falls, one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world.
After a night at Masindi, we depart to Budongo Central Forest Reserve to search for the chimpanzees with a trained guide amongst the biggest Mahogany forest in East Africa, branches teeming with birdlife. At the heart of this forest, take advantage of this tranquil atmosphere and enjoy a boat cruise along a section of the Nile River. Taking a breather the next day, we spend the night overlooking Lake Kikorongo. Crossing the equator, we come to Lake Buyonyi, where we will prepare for the pinnacle of our tour.
This optional is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth: trekking through dense, verdant jungle to come face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas. While the exact numbers vary, there are around 650 individuals left. Seeing them up close is breathtaking and unforgettable. While smaller in size, there is also the choice to trek after another elusive and exclusive primate – the Golden Monkey. These creatures are found frolicing in bamboo plants, which is both its main food source and nesting place.
Not only are these experiences astounding, but each visitor is also contributing to conservation efforts.
The road turns to Lake Mburo National Park, a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. With over 350 bird species and a diverse landscape of savannah, woodland, and wetland, it’s a fitting finale to your time in Uganda. Returning to Jinja, we enjoy a sunset cruise on the Nile before crossing back into Kenya and wrapping up the circuit in Eldoret and finally Nairobi.
This journey through Kenya and Uganda is a homage to Africa’s extraordinary wonders. From the Nile’s currents to the mist over Bwindi’s peaks, there are few views and encounters that are so spectacular as well as impactful on the continued preservation of the animals that live there.
