Unfolding on a twelve-day odyssey through Southern Africa, be mesmerized by the coastline of South Africa and the peaks of Lesotho’s clouded kingdom. Your journey begins on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, winding inland to the cradle of uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park. These peaks shield the basin below, being known as the “Barrier of Spears”. Two nights are spent nestled here, taking to the trails leading through the viridian hills. Within the area, we observe the cascade of Howick Falls and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, entrenching you in the region’s historical and cultural soul.
Heading onwards, we enter Lesotho. Crossing through the sandstone of Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the route climbs into its mountainous vistas. A hike brings you to prehistoric rock art and the plunging waterfalls that split its valleys. For those seeking cultural immersion, a pony trek or local village visit offers a window into a way of life shaped by the surrounding landscape.
Descending into South Africa once more, the Karoo unfurls before us. Time slows in the colonial relic that is the historic town of Graaff-Reinet. An early rise opportunity presents the Valley of Desolation illuminated by the sun’s first rays. Retreating to Addo Elephant National Park that afternoon, a spectacular hotspot for wildlife amongst golden acacia brush, we have two days of afternoon safaris on our Nomad vehicles.
Our trip turns to the Garden Route, a lush panorama awaiting us. The Tsitsikamma National Park greets you with waves pounding at rocky shores and the whisper of native fynbos plants. Be prepared to hike the Waterfall Trail or stroll boardwalks along the Storms River Mouth for scenic views galore.
The path pivots inland to Oudtshoorn, home to the archaic Cango Caves, where you’ll explore the vast limestone chambers of its subterranean network. Driving south through the Little Karoo, we come to the southernmost point of the African continent, Cape Agulhas, before arriving in the oceanic haven of Hermanus.
On your final morning, wander the enthralling Hermanus cliff path as the ocean stirs below, and wrap up your adventure along the Cape Whale Coast Route with a stop at the African penguin colony at Stony Point. This voyage ends in Cape Town, with your heart full of stories and laughter, etched by landscapes both remarkable and untamed.
