Leaving the cityscape of Nairobi, we plunge straight into East Africa’s savannah soul in the Masai Mara National Park. Surrounded by acacia-dotted horizons, the stage is set for an exceptional safari experience in this bucket-list locale. Continuing north through the Great Rift Valley, we reach Lake Nakuru, the thousands of flamingos and pelicans painting its shores in a blush.
Uganda, the “Pearl of Africa,” welcomes us with viridescent abundance, passing through Jinja’s bustle. In Murchison Falls National Park, we embark on a boat cruise on the Nile, winding through greenery to view the narrow gorge it rips through. From here, we take to Budongo Forest, searching mahogany trees’ canopies for chimpanzees, pausing for a secondary boat cruise to unwind. Preparing for one of our highlights, we revel in Lake Kikorongo and Lake Bunyonyi’s sprawling vistas as anticipation builds.
One of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth is this one: Gorilla Trekking. Hiking the living cathedral that is Bwindi Forest, seeing them up close is a monumental experience. For those seeking the unusual, Golden Monkey trekking is also available. Not only are these experiences astounding, but each visitor is contributing to conservation efforts. A trip back to Nairobi takes us across other national parks, from lakes filled with birdlife to thrill-seeking optional hotspots, before we begin our pivot towards Tanzania.
We dive into the wild’s embrace in the Serengeti, the Big Five roam freely and sunsets turn the grasses to flame. Even choose to drift above it all on a hot air balloon safari. The verdant caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater presents an all-encompassing ridge with the promise of outstanding sightings. You’ll head onward to Zanzibar, an island refuge perfect for beach-side bliss. Explore the spice-scented labyrinth of Stone Town, dive into the turquoise ocean activities, or merely unwind at your own pace.
Returning to the mainland, Mikumi National Park offers baobab-dotted landscapes and cultural excursions. In Iringa, we savor the journey of Tanzanian coffee from bean to cup. Proceeding into Malawi, we recline by cobalt-blue Lake Malawi, with optional hikes to Dwanbazi Waterfall. Zambia’s lush countryside leads to South Luangwa National Park, a sanctuary of woodland wilderness, another perfect spot for our safari and an optional walking safari. In nearby Mulberry Mongoose, snares become stunning jewelry crafted by local women.
We end in Livingstone, where Victoria Falls thunders with primal majesty, a grand finale to an odyssey stitching together seven African countries into a tapestry of unforgettable memories. We recommend spending an extra night in Livingstone to be able to revel in all the thrilling activities around the falls if you so choose.
