An alluring 11-day safari traces the ancient heartbeat of Southern Africa, traversing the history of its indigenous cultures and exploring sanctuaries of its endangered wildlife. Beginning at the illustrious Victoria Falls, where the entirety of the Zambezi cascades into the carved gorge below, our destination is the secluded expanse of Hwange National Park. Largely untouched, the land brings elephant herds drifting across golden plains, lions basking beneath acacia shadows, and is home to many endangered species.
In Hwange’s early morning light, prepare for a safari as we take to the brush, listening to the backdrop of the 400 bird species filling the region as its other inhabitants awaken. A visit to the Painted Dog Conservation Centre brings light to the enigmatic Wild Dog, revealing the fight to protect these creatures as spirited and intricate as the patterns on their coats.
Next, the landscape transforms into granite boulders and peaks at Matopos National Park, many balancing precariously yet unmoving. Taking to its sanded roads, we have an afternoon of searching for wildlife. This is also another of Africa’s prime rhino havens, where if conditions are correct, you can track these majestic beasts on-foot with a guide.
The journey continues east to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, a monument to Zulu’s cultural history. These looming walls and mysterious towers are the remnants of a once-thriving empire, their stones each holding the stories of intercontinental trade, power, and sophistication.
As the route arcs south, the wild beckons once more. The remote Mapesu Private Game Reserve offers a wilderness of baobab hills and sandstone echoes. Huddled in caves and outcroppings, we observe the San rock art created many centuries ago at the Kaoxa Rock Shelter. A rare opportunity presents itself, where travellers will head out on a walking safari with a guide, where they will track endangered animals across the reserve, with a high success rate of seeing either wild dogs, rhino or cheetah.
Crossing into South Africa, the Kruger region unfolds in golden-hour safaris in Phalaborwa’s private reserves to a morning walk that immerses you into Timbavati’s grassland, where the Big Five roam freely amongst the thickets. Making a scenic detour, the Panorama Route beckons with vistas like God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and the Blyde River Canyon. As our tour comes to an end, we have a full-day open-vehicle safari in Kruger, offering one last plunge into the wilderness for astonishing sightings.
Returning to Johannesburg, guests carry home not just photographs but the deep imprint of Africa’s soul and cultures of this ancient and wonderful world.
