Leave the hum of Johannesburg behind as you travel eastward through Mpumalanga, winding toward the plains of the sun-soaked Greater Kruger National Park. Absconding in the dawn’s fiery light, we enter the park for a full day of safari sightings. Search the lowveld for animals of all shapes and sizes, from the sleek leopards amongst trees to the antelope grazing in open fields. A shift in scenery, but not in wonder, is next. The Panorama Route sweeps you along colossal escarpments, featuring phenomenal views of geographical landmarks Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, and God’s Window.
Step into the land-locked country of Eswatini, a tiny but mighty kingdom nestled in the mountains. Wind through rising hills to the Ezulwini Valley, whether by biking or hiking, where cultural abundance and natural beauty blend seamlessly.
We continue south into Zululand, where the stories of Zulu warriors whisper through the savannah. Setting out early, you’ll roam Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve on a safari, the park being well-known as a haven for endangered rhino. That afternoon brings an outing onto the St Lucia estuary at sunset, mirroring the orange haze of the sun across hippos peeking out the water.
Travelling to the subtropics, climb into the Drakensberg Mountains, where mist curls around jagged peaks. Here, you’ll visit the Mandela Capture Site and gaze on Howick Falls before hiking through highland meadows, surrounded by stone outcrops etched by time & rainfall. Lesotho awaits as our next destination, our convoy rises into cloud-wrapped ranges where horseback shepherds are a commonality. Sightsee hidden waterfalls and ancient rock art, or travel like the locals, pony trekking through valleys untouched by modern noise.
Descending from mountainous terrain, we traverse the arid Karoo, stopping at colonial towns and witnessing a sunrise across the Valley of Desolation’s basalt spires. Afternoon brings us to Addo Elephant National Park, searching for its resident elephants and wildlife amongst the acacias filled with birdsong. We close off our tour in Gqeberha, savouring the safari from yesterday and thinking back to all the amazing views we have witnessed.
