This route is a path layered in wondrous displays of wildlife and landscape. Victoria Falls is the opening melody to this symphony of natural marvels, its downpour throwing rainbows into the sky with its spray. There are many delights to be had around the area, and as such, we recommend extending a few extra days beforehand to truly revel in the thrill-seeking activities.
Leaving behind the curtains of Victoria Falls, we drive onwards to Botswana and the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), which is an astonishing cross-border conservation initiative, merging the territories of five African nations. Our destination is the Chobe River, which flows as a silver ribbon through emerald terrain. In the golden hush of afternoon, a boat cruise becomes our viewpoint, joined by the wading elephants and hippos that roam its banks, with crocodiles patiently basking in the sun.
Pivoting, we make our way south, green falling away to reveal the stark beauty of the Makgadikgadi Pans, before it suddenly springs back as we enter Khwai Conservation Area. Prepare to delve into the wild core of Botswana, the Okavango Delta. The largest delta in the world, this area is host to a myriad of species that migrate to and fro along its banks. Reaching your secluded camp by open safari vehicle, you find yourself deep in its gorgeous terrain. Framed in reeds and lilies, you’ll depart on a mokoro (traditional canoe) along the Delta’s waterways, the hum of the surrounding bush the epitome of tranquility.
Our expedition turns to the densest concentrations of wildlife in Southern Africa, the Moremi Game Reserve, a mosaic of wetlands and woodlands where the trees and shrubbery span out in all directions. Lions sprawl in the shade, buffalo graze on open plains, and the call of a fish eagle echoes like a hymn. A wildlife enthusiast’s dream, we embark on a full day drive with wonderful sightings in mind.
Before we depart the Delta, travellers can take the opportunity to soar above the wilderness one last time, revealing the Delta’s veins of water and islands, on an early morning flight. Taking your onward journey home from Maun, your final stop, remember to recall the welcoming haze of the savanna and the gleam of the Delta.
