Set off into the red horizons of Namibia’s otherworldly landscape, where vast desert plains meet dramatic coastlines and ancient landscapes tell stories of time immemorial. You will find yourself enchanted with sunrises and sunsets over rock formations, high-rise dunes and impossibly old trees and cultures – which all glitter under a parade of stars in an untainted night sky. Your adventure begins in Windhoek before heading south through the Kalahari Desert. The first stop and stayover is located at Keetmanshoop, where a sunset walk among strange, centuries old Quiver Trees gives you a taste of Namibia’s stark beauty.
The following morning invites you to meander the dolerite boulders at Giant’s Playground, driving to Ai-Ais Resort for the night. Early in the morning, in the soft light of dawn, we take in the rugged beauty of the Fish River Canyon – the second largest canyon in the world. The next night is spent in the harbour town of Ludertiz, on the Atlantic Coast. On day four, we visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a hauntingly beautiful remnant of Namibia’s diamond-rush past which has been reclaimed by the sand and sun.
As the journey continues, you’ll traverse shifting desert scenery to reach the iconic dunes of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Climb the famed Dune 45 at sunrise before treading among the skeletal camelthorn trees that rise from the cracking clay pan at Deadvlei, even exploring the interior of the Sessriem canyon’s cragged walls on foot. After this magnificent outing, we head north to Swakopmund, stopping en route to visit the ancient Welwitschia plant and the lunar-like terrain of the Namib Desert.
Traveling up the Skeleton Coast, you’ll witness the awe-inspiring meeting of sea and sand. Heading inland, we head to Twyfelfontein to browse their ancient rock engravings depicting scenes of animals and people from thousands of years ago, alongside the fossilized trunks of the Petrified Forest now mimicking the boulders around it. The next two days are spent surveying the roughened and gravelly pans of Etosha National Park, a surprising haven for wildlife due to waterholes dotted about for lions, elephants, rhinos and far more to concentrate around.
Your final leg leads to the Waterberg Plateau. A guided hike offers panoramic views of the mountainous landscape, with a chance to catch a glimpse of animals amongst the acacia. Leaving the greener region of Namibia, we return to Windhoek and take a brief city tour. It is here where you disembark and take your treasured memories of exceptional safaris and Namibia’s varied vistas home.
