This is Nomad
We are Nomad.
African-owned journeys, operated across Africa since 1997.
Nomad Africa Tours & Safaris is a South African-based tour operator shaped by overland journeys, small-group travel, comfort departures, premium products and tailor-made African itineraries. We are guides, drivers, planners, workshop crew, operations staff, reservations specialists and travel experts working together to keep every journey moving.
The journey that started it all
London to Cape Town, 1996.
Before Nomad became a company, it was a journey. In 1996, Alexander Rutherford travelled across Africa from London to Cape Town. That expedition became the beginning of Nomad: a company shaped by long roads, practical problem-solving, value for money and a deep love of the continent.
“It gave me a love of Africa that runs deep.”
Alex’s founding idea was practical rather than polished: do it better, do it with integrity, keep the spirit of adventure alive, and make African travel accessible without losing what makes it real.

A company shaped by the road
The product is Africa. The difference is knowing how to operate it.
Nomad did not begin as a polished travel brand. It began with a long road journey, and it grew through the practical realities of African travel: distance, weather, border days, vehicle preparation, camp routines, guide decisions, supplier relationships and the people who make the experience possible.
Our trucks, routes, crew, office teams, suppliers and travellers are all part of the same story. When a guest books with Nomad, they support a wider African travel network: guides, drivers, workshop crew, activity providers, accommodation partners, local vendors, communities and the people who host our groups across the continent.
The route
Our routes are shaped by distance, season, road conditions, borders, parks, rest points, supplier timing and places that make sense together.
The fleet
We build truck bodies in-house and service and maintain our fleet ourselves. The workshop is part of the product, not a background function.
The people
Our guides, drivers and office crew bring together local knowledge, sales, reservations, operations, marketing, accounts, road support and guest care.
The wider circle
Our suppliers and travellers matter. Camps, lodges, activity providers and local vendors help host our clients, and every journey invests in that wider network.
Mission and values
Good journeys need more than good scenery.
Africa provides the wild places, landscapes, wildlife and sense of scale. Our role is to prepare the journey properly, give honest advice, support the people who operate it, and work with partners who share our commitment to quality, value, responsibility and opportunity.
Quality & value
We build journeys that balance cost, route quality, inclusions, comfort and experience.
Responsibility & accountability
We take the details seriously because small misses can affect real travel.
Fun & adventure
The journey should still feel alive, social and memorable.
Integrity & honesty
We value clear communication, realistic expectations and fair dealing.
Service & efficiency
Good travel depends on preparation, response time and follow-through.
Employment & opportunity
Nomad’s story is also about African jobs, skills and the people behind the road.
The people behind the journey
Office, road, workshop and support.
This section will keep growing. The goal is to introduce the people behind Nomad properly: leadership, reservations, sales, finance, operations, guides, drivers, workshop crew and the teams who support travellers and agents before, during and after each journey.
